Stone Sour is back! After recording and touring in support of Slipknot’s last album – All Hope Is Gone – Corey Taylor and Jim Root, also known as #8 and #4, are back with Stone Sour and they’re currently in the process of recording the band’s third studio album – Audio Secrecy.
In August Corey Taylor told Rock Sound: “We are already started to put together demos for Stone Sour. Our new stuff sounds real melodic but real dark, it is way darker than the first two albums and way more cohesive. I don’t know what it is, I’m still flushing shit out.”
A month later Corey spoke to Noisecreep, and in that interview he revealed some new details about the recording process of the new album. Corey said that the band will go into the studio in January “for two or three months to get the record together,” the record is already taking shape. “We’ve already got ten tunes fully written and another 15 we’re kind of working on here and there,” he told Noisecreep. “When I’m not on the road I’m still working, I never stop. And it’s really good, everything we’re doing is really, really good.”
Though the record is still in its “infancy,” according to Taylor, he does have an idea of the sound. “I can say the material is darker than ‘Come Whatever May,’ but a lot more melodic, a lot stronger, a lot more mature, and the lyrics that are coming out of me are really good,” he say. “I’m really excited.”
Speaking of lyrics, with so many projects how does Taylor which song belongs with which band? “I just kind of go by my gut,” he says. But it’s his gut he listens to, not yours. “A lot of times people ask me and this is a perfect example, why I brought ‘Snuff’ to the table for Slipknot,” he says. “They’re like, ‘That’s so obviously a Stone Sour song.’ I was like, ‘How do you know? I wrote the song. How would you like to tell me what my song should go with?”
Sometimes the songs just make it easy. “There are certain songs that are just quite simply very specific. Like a lot of my solo stuff doesn’t sound like the other two bands. It’s much more three-chord rock ‘n’ roll,” he says. “But then Stone Sour stuff it’s very specific; I just know what’s a Slipknot song, what’s a Stone Sour song, and what’s a solo tune. And luckily I can kind of see that. But at the same time if there’s a song that sounds different but I want it to go with a different band that just means you gotta lead with your heart. I don’t want to ever limit anything.”
In late November Roy Mayorga posted this update on his official website: “It’s been quite some time since We all got in a room together so, We’re all looking forward to get down and jam. Starting December for 2 weeks before the Holidays and then continue on starting January-April 2010.
We have a catalog of songs to go through and from what I’ve been hearing from the others (Shawn, Josh, Jim and Corey) it’s sounding very different from the last record in every way now that there is 5 writers including myself.
Some songs are heavy, dark, melodic and with a lot of color. A very well rounded record this is going to be.”
In December 2009 it was announced that Stone Sour will be working with producer Rob Cavallo on their upcoming record. “He’s worked with a lot of people and it’s going to be awesome,” singer Corey Taylor told U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine. “I can’t wait to see what he does with us, man. We took a couple of meetings with him and he’s really, really stoked on the music. I think this is probably a little heavier he’s used to but I have every confidence we’re going to make a great album together.”
On January 12, 2010 Stone Sour announced that they will be working with producer Nick Raskulinecz in the Blackbird Studio (Nashville, TN.)
Corey Taylor: “I cannot wait to make this Stone Sour album. Everything already feels a million times stronger than anything we’ve done in the past. Plus getting back together with Nick is going to mean monstrous things. This is the year for Stone Sour.”
A week later the band posted the following update on their twitter account: “We’ve got 10 songs down and we’re waiting on vocals. Nick is kicking our asses!”
